Zoom Out

It is easy for me to get caught up in all the tasks and things to do in a day or a week. My lists are long. When I focus on that long list of tasks... it is like sitting at the beach and noticing each one of the grains of sand and comparing each of them to something that I am thinking about or have to do... and knowing there are so many more beneath that visible top layer. Not seeing the end creates a sense of overwhelm and anxiety in me.

ZOOM OUT THE FOCUS

What if I step back for a moment... take a breath and zoom my focus out... taking notice of all that is in front of me. At the beach that looks like seeing the water glisten, the clouds float gently across the sky, and the boats sail along the coastline. It is hearing the people talking and laughing, the bird calls, the gentle wind rustling the umbrellas, and the ocean waves which is my favorite sound. It is the scent of the ocean and suntan lotion drifting through the air.

LIVING INTENTIONALLY

What if I use that same 'noticing' in my life today? What if I reflect on what I am doing all of these tasks for... to earn income to support our livelihood, spend time with my daughter over a cup of coffee, hear the perspectives of others and learn about personal and business interests, make a healthy colorful salad to go with the herb chicken on the grill for dinner, connect with my husband as we catch up on our day, and feel the comfortable soft pillow as I lay down to rest peacefully. Some of those tasks align directly with my values - connection, health and love while other tasks support the ability to meet what I naturally strive for; growth, achievement and contribution. The LIVING is what I choose to focus on the most and to shift my mindset away from being overrun with the necessary DOing (the task list) to the more fulfilling BEing.
